Nethack has everything, including the kitchen sink, so it its more fun if you have some background. I love nethack but I agree that it may not be the best choice for a first ascii roguelike. If in doubt, start with a tankie melee character with good weapons skills and armor, characters like the Knight, the Samurai, or the Paladin they’re be able to walk right through early enemies, enabling you to get deeper quicker with less food use, and thus less chance of starving to death. Of course, some characters have an easier start than others. That’s how I played it originally, and how I play it now, as I tend to dislike reading spoilers I prefer to think on my feet and react to Pathos just tells you the probability of a potential action before you attempt it, removing any of the guess work. Like many RogueLikes, learning the game is basically just knowing what to value: Good armor / Survivability, decent Damage, some ranged options, Panic buttons like healing pots, teleport scrolls stuff like that.īut Pathos seems to have been made as a reaction against the obscured nature of Nethack’s systems, of some players playing Nethack with the wiki open. NetHack is very opaque with things, but it mostly comes down to avoiding the things you should not do, or the things you should not do early, or before your character can handle them. You can always play RogueLikes blind, even NetHack.
ANGBAND ITEM STATS ANDROID
Plus, it controllers VERY WELL with a touch screen, which deserves a callout as well.Īlso, there is always Android emulation if you need it on the PC Cool, but no need, as Pathos has a native Windows build (Thanks Lerke). Pathos is Mobile only, on Mobile + PC, and free. Look at fountains to determine the drinking possibilities, check the stats and resists on your many foes, even what intrinsic resistances you might gain from Consuming their corpse!

In Pathos, you don't need to memorize keyboard commands, and the potential outcomes on every action are an examination of the object away. And that approachability did NOT take the approach of dropping down the difficulty, which is far too often the case in some games. Pathos is like Nethack, but FAR more approachable. Not ASCII, as its rocking tiles, music and sound, but since interest was shown in NetHack, some here might like Pathos: NetHack Codex, and not yet be aware of its awesomeness. playing without spoilers can be a nightmare, and the game was kinda meant to be played by sharing tips and advice with other people anyway If you do try it i would recommend reading the wiki or at least popping in to /r/nethack.

ive come to begrudgingly love it because there's nothing else like it, but that also makes it hard to recommend. It's intentionally really obtuse about all this stuff, which isnt helped by a chunk of those answers being puns or jokes or references. it's more about exploring the mechanics of the game and figuring out how all of its millions of systems and items and dungeon features and monsters all work. Nethack is very strange and kind of like a big puzzle. if you like loot games with randomly generated equipment it also provides that. "grindy" in that it lets you progress as slow or fast as you want without worrying about food. It's my least favorite of these, but it is just really well done and looks great even if youre not used to ascii.Īngband will also feel much more like a standard modern game than nethack. it's also strongly about working with what items you find rather than planning out a build or creating a certain set of tools. Part of its design is that it tries to be really clear and easy to understand (so the exact opposite of nethack).
